There’s nothing more refreshing than a glass of cold water from your fridge!
Especially on a hot summers day! However if the water tastes funky, it can ruin the refreshing experience.
There are a number of reasons for your water tasting off, most of which you can usually get to the bottom with a little detective work.
Possible reasons for your fridge water tasting funky
The filter needs changing
Your plumbed fridge water has a filter connected to the water dispenser that needs to be changed as per your fridge manufacturers recommendations (usually every 6 months). A worn out filter doesn’t filter minerals from your local water supply, which can result in the water tasting odd.
Food odours
Strong smelling food such as fish or spices can transfer into the water and ice in your fridge or freezer making it taste off. To avoid this clean the inside of your fridge regularly, use air tight containers for storing food and keep an open box of baking soda in the door as this absorbs food smells.
Problems with the water supply line
The tubing that carries the water to your fridge dispenser is made of plastic. Over time this plastic can absorb odours, which are then transferred to the water. One way to eliminate this problem is to professionally replace the plastic tubing with copper.
Any of these factors can cause your water to taste funky and fortunately aren’t serious or harmful to your health.
However if you have changed the filter and eliminated the food odours, you may want to contact a professional such as Bayside Appliance Repairs to check if there is a problem with the water supply line.
